Privacy Policy
Last updated: Dec 6, 2024
To provide data services and data storage capabilities the Astro Data Lab science platform needs to authenticate users on our systems. "We" means the Astro Data Lab team, "you" means you as a user of Astro Data Lab.
The following short Data Privacy Policy is meant to give our users a sense of what data we collect and how we handle them. Please note that additionally NOIRLab's Privacy Policy may apply.
Your continued use of the Astro Data Lab science platform constitutes agreement with this Privacy Policy.
What we do:
-
When you register for an account we ask your name, your chosen user account name and user password, a valid email address, your institution (if applicable), and a brief description of your scientific interest in Data Lab. The account name, password, and email address are necessary for us to provide and operate the data services.
-
We store cookies on your browser that enable logging into and out of the Data Lab systems.
-
We log some of your activity on our servers. This can include (subject to change as we continuously develop our data services): when you log in and out, what queries and other data requests you submit, the times when you execute Jupyter notebooks and launch computing tasks, etc.
-
We provide storage for your personal science data files (on VOSpace and notebook server), and your personal database tables (on MyDB). If needed, we have access to your files for diagnostic purposes.
-
We periodically evaluate anonymized aggregate usage analytics of the Data Lab services, including for instance: how many queries are users running daily, which datasets are most popular over time, how many new users register each week, from what countries do users connect to Data Lab systems, etc.
-
We protect your data to the best of our abilities. Your login credentials are encrypted on the system. Our data services use SSL (https) to encrypt the connection between your computer and our system. You should use a sufficiently complex password. You should never re-use the same password between different platforms (please use a unique password for Data Lab).
What we don't do:
-
We don't track your activities across the internet beyond the Data Lab systems.
-
We don't sell or otherwise share your account data or activity data with anyone outside of the Data Lab project.
